The National Institute of Telecommunications is a modern research & development institution employing the team of scientists and experts with high competences in the field of telecommunications and information technology. An extremely quick pace of changes in those areas and a related emergence of the information civilization understood as a combination of the information society and the knowledge-based economy, constitute challenges the Institute is able to meet.
The Institute operates pursuant to the Act of July the 25th, 1985 on the Research & Development Units (Journal of Laws of 2001, No.3, Item 388, with later amendments) and the Statute of the National Institute of Telecommunications acknowledged by the Ordinance No. 40 of the Minister of Infrastructure dated May 16th, 2008 (Official Journal of Ministry of Infrastructure of 2008, No 5, Item 51).
National Institute of Telecommunications have the status of State Research Institute.
The Institute employs nearly 250 persons in its three centers: in Warsaw, Wrocław and Gdańsk. It has a stable economic position and manages to operate effectively in the new market conditions and in a quickly changing environment. Undoubtedly it is possible due to its more then 75 years of tradition and resulting experiences, highly qualified scientific and engineering staff and tangible resources.
The activity of the Institute can be shown by a few following examples.
Main research activity of the Institute is focused on multiyear projects. First was The New Generation IT Services and Networks Project, realized as public order for the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The Institute leaded and coordinated the consortium of 6 partners in this project. Two new projects financed from structural funds of Innovative Economy Operational Programme begun recently, and two others was gained for 2010 and beyond plans.
International research activity of the Institute is focused on several types of projects (FP6 and FP7, COST, Eureka, InterReg). The scope of these projects is wide, as wide is our research activity. It varies from new measurement methods for optical systems and theoretical models for convergent networks, to information systems for some social studies and efficient and secure solutions for sea navigation.
The Institute realizes as well R&D contracts for the Polish industry, mainly for telecom operators and some other suppliers active on the market. These contractor projects give us special satisfaction because of results directly implemented into practice and measurable effect for our industrial partners.
Our Laboratory of Electrical, Electronic & Optoelectronic Metrology has official accreditation for inter-laboratories comparison testing, the first of this type in Poland issued by PCA (Polish Centre for Accreditation). This summarizes in the best way the high quality and competency of our laboratories and its staff. We have also opened the services of our time laboratory, based on two Atomic Time standards, to the public via net (class STRATUM-1 standards, available with NTP protocol on our website). All who need high quality and stable time scale can now use it.
The Institute, as national research centre, and our research and technical staff, provide also expertise and consultancy services to the government and local administration. This activity is focused mainly on important national projects as Digital Poland (Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration) and Broadband Infrastructure Development and Digital TV Implementation (Ministry of Infrastructure, Office of Electronic Communication, Local Governments). We are especially proud of being able to support these projects vital for the society.
Important part of our activity is organization of international scientific conferences. The Institute organizes two cyclic international conferences: ICTON (International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks) and DSTIS (International Conference on Decision Support for Telecommunications and Information Society). They have became already recognized scientific events and gathered several hundred participants.
You will find more detailed information about our legal status, mission and internal structure, as many details on our research departments, scientific and R&D staff, their activities, main projects and achievements, publications and patents in published by the Institute Annual Report 2017.
